Texting While Driving - Banned

Texting and driving has cost thousands of lives in recent years. Still, many motorists continue to send and receive text messages while they are driving their vehicles.

The federal government just issued a texting while driving ban to all commercial truck drivers and bus drivers. The fine will be up to $2,750.00.

Most people can see how dangerous it would be for bus or truck drivers to be texting while behind the wheel of their large vehicles. Yet many of those drivers don’t hold themselves to the same standard they apply to others.

Dozens of states have also passed similar "No Texting While Driving" laws and even more states are in the process of creating their own.  An example: Texas law forbids texting by drivers younger than 18, by school bus drivers and by motorists in a school zone or who are transporting a child. Teenagers are often seen breaking this law and texting while they are driving.

A school bus driver told the the local paper, “This kid was driving right towards me, reading something on his cell phone and paying no attention to the road. I had to move over almost off the road to avoid him and he never even looked up, just kept reading his message as he drove past me and my bus load of kids. It was ridiculous!”

A resident stated having strong feelings about texting while driving, saying, “I don’t think people should be able to text or talk on the cell phone while driving. It’s too distracting and we are just not that important to put other people in danger. How would you feel if you killed somebody? It’s not worth it.”

Studies have shown that drivers, who are sending or reading text messages while behind the wheel, are 8 times more likely to be involved in a car accident. A study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute showed that reading a text takes drivers an average of 4.6 seconds. In 4.6 seconds at around 55 MPH, a car can travel the length of a football field.

Face it......Texting or reading a text while driving is just as dangerous as driving while drunk.  And now it is just as illegal to do so while driving a truck or bus.  Don't do it!
